The beauty
The Bed & Bunker project by Stelling33 transforms old bunkers along the Dutch coast into meaningful places to stay. German bunkers are controversial and underexposed piece of history. Few people know that shortly after the war hundreds of German bunkers in the Netherlands were reused as replacement housing or holiday homes. So in fact, the idea is not new. We were mainly inspired by the resilience of the past and see opportunities to give this cultural heritage a new meaningful and positive function.

Blooey designed two projects for Stelling33: a bunker-inspired design collection and the to-be repurposed pilot recreational retreat in Hoek van Holland. Both projects trigger sustainable bunker experiences with respect for our history and nature.

The collection features iconic storytelling objects made by local craftsmen using (when possible) materials reclaimed from demolished bunkers. The profit made on the collection is used to crowdfund future bunker projects.

The good
Stichting 33 mission is to create sustainable and peaceful concepts to repurpose bunkers from the German Atlantikwall. By giving the bunkers a new function in a sustainable and ecological way, a camouflaged alternative to coastal development is created and we contribute to the preservation of the surrounding nature.

The bunker lamp and hanger are made from reclaimed steel from a second World War bunker (1943).

The wood used for the collection was provided by the Zuid Hollands Landschap foundation from (naturally blown over) local oak wood.

Design and production was completely done in the Rotterdam region by local craftsmen and producers.
